7 Tips to Reduce the Signs of Aging in the Eye Area

Removing Eye Area Makeup

We've been developing skincare for over 10 years. From our experience, the eye area is one of the most challenging areas to deal with. However, with a little care, and the right approach, this area can remain radiant and vibrant.

The eye area consists of the most delicate skin on the face. Unfortunately, this area shows signs of aging first with the development of fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness, loss of firmness, dryness, and uneven texture. Even if these signs are not apparent yet, most of the damage may already be under the surface of the skin.

This understanding lead Dr. Rivers to development his Eye Repair Treatment. It is specifically designed to provide much needed hydration to the delicate eye area and includes specialized molecules called peptides to help reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles. There is a lot we can do to minimize the aging effects in the eye area. Environmental stressors and lifestyle play a huge part in the aging process, accelerating the rate of visible damage, according to the National Institute on Aging.

7 Tips to Minimize the Aging Effects in the Eye Area

    1. Decrease Sun Exposure and Tanning

The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that UVA rays accelerate the aging process by penetrating deep into the basal layer of the epidermis. This is especially true of the eye area where the skin is considerably thinner, and more susceptible to UV induced pigmentation (dark patches and age spots). Wearing sunglasses or prescription glasses with UVA and UVB labeling may help to stave off the sun’s rays from the eye area.

    2. Quit Smoking

According to research in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, airborne toxins and particulate matter such as those found in urban pollution and cigarette smoke can cause inflammation and even trigger the malanocytes that lead to skin darkening age spots. This leads to premature aging, especially for smokers, in the eye area.

    3. Consider a Humidifier

Our skin has a moisture barrier which protects the underlying structure and keeps skin-harming free radicals, and inflammatory particulate matter out. Consistent exposure to dry air can lead to a breakdown of this barrier which can result in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. Often, especially during winter months, the air in our homes can be extra dry and recirculated. A humidifier will replace the moisture in the air. Depending on the environment, a humidifier can be used all year long if needed.

    4. Take Care with Cosmetics Around the Eye Area

During the application of eye cosmetics, some have a tendency to pull or tug at the eye area. If this action becomes a daily habit, fine lines will develop and become noticeable. Many cosmetic counter makeup artists can demonstrate the correct way to apply cosmetics for free.

    5. Decrease Stress Levels

Easier said than done perhaps, but high stress levels can cause an increase in the stress hormone, cortisol which can lead to immune system damage and visible changes in skin. Most often, these changes present as wrinkles, crows-feet and a loss of firmness. These three signs of aging are especially evident in the delicate eye area. Learn ways to efficiently manage time and decrease stress. Taking time for adequate exercise daily may help to relieve tension.

    6. Hydrate and Eat Clean

Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate the body, resulting in dry skin and less of a supple look to the eye area. While it is true that extra hydration won't necessarily lead to extra plump and youthful skin, a minimum, healthy hydration level is required for proper skin barrier function. Use a large water bottle and continuously fill it to meet your body’s daily requirement. Processed foods tend to be laden with chemicals and other ingredients the human body has trouble metabolizing. Eating whole foods including vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and complex carbohydrates will place the body back into balance. This good nutrition can be seen on the outside as skin will begin to plump and look noticeably brighter.

    7. Use an Effective Eye Cream

The use of scientifically formulated eye cream can slow the aging process in the eye area. Look for an eye cream offering ingredients that will hydrate, brighten, firm, decrease puffiness, and smooth texture. It is never too late (or too early) to care for this delicate area.

Riversol's founding dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers has created an eye cream to specifically address the appearance of aging in the eye area.  It's one of the most concentrated anti-aging formulations in his portfolio and yes, a little goes a very long way.  Our eye cream has been shown to reduce the appearance of dark eye circles and rejuvenate the skin.
